Actually took a little vacation over the weekend. Left work, the wife and kids on Friday afternoon and headed down to fish the Merrimack River with a bunch of old friends.
I write about it in this space because I found the trip informative on a couple of levels.
1) This is really the first time I've used one of our boats in the way most of our customers do - heavy-duty fishing. We fished all afternoon Friday, all day Saturday and all day Sunday. We were with friends who were fishing off a well-known fiberglass center console fishing boat. One of the cool things was cleaning up. I just took a pickle bucket - grabbed a couple of pails of water and rinsed off the boat and we looked as good as first thing in the morning. Their boat looked like hell, even after spending time with a washdown pump and scrub brush. Also - when we rafted up to have lunch or swap fishermen, my buddy was beside himself with worry about our gunwales coming together - getting fenders out - watching them for efficacy, etc. My boat would easily have ripped of his gunwale guard.
2) The Merrimack. Holy Cow! What an absolutely crazy place. There were dozens and dozens of boats at the mouth of a river with 5+ knots of current. Some boats were moored and others were drifting in this channel with Cigarette boats and cruisers blasting through. There were 4'-5' stand-up waves at the mouth on what was a calm day! Where I normally fish, if someone comes within 100 yards they are getting a bit cozy, but there we had boats within conversational talking distance at times.
Having said all of that, the fishing was great. Most folks were minding the rules of the road (with a couple of notable exceptions!)
Think I'll head back next year for some early season (for Maine) fishing....
