Yarmouth, ME
This may be a bit uninteresting for those simply interested in boats but as I said originally in this space I'm keeping you updated on all aspects of Black Lab.
Woke up this AM at 4:00, took the dogs out, made some strong coffee then sat down at the computer.
I've been meaning to trademark the phrase I created "Plate Alloy Boats" before someone else started using it as their own. About a year ago I made the decision to try and make clear the differences between our boats and aluminum boat brands like Lund, Starcraft, Quintrex, etc. Their boats are made from sheet metal which is metal less than 3/16" in thickness (Usually much less!). They are very thin and usually riveted but sometimes welded like in the case of Tracker and Quintrex. Additionally, these boats hulls are made from inferior marine-grade alloys - usually 5052 - which is around 30% weaker than the 5086 we use.
It is a never ending source of frustration for me that many uninformed people equate our boats with these boats. Not that there is anything wrong with these brands as they produce very serviceable, inexpensive boats for light-duty use.
So I took the words from an Australian magazine called Plate and Alloy Boats of Australia and combined them into Black Lab "Plate Alloy Boats" (Trademark Pending :)) and changed our corporate logo to incorporate the phrase. This morning, in my den, I filed a trademark application on the phrase with the US Patent and Trademark Office!
As an aside...since we first started using this phrase it has been gratifying that we've started to see it used more and more. People now call and ask about "those plate alloy boats" not "those aluminum boats..."
As I said, possibly uninteresting to anyone but me but I'm glad that we're actually changing a small segment of the saltwater fishing and boating market and that people are responding..
